So without further ado, I am delighted to introduce to our latest featured lender – Haleemah Adam.
Tell us a bit about yourself! Who is Haleemah Adam outside of the fashion rental world?
As a newly qualified Audiologist fresh out of university, I’m excited to start making a difference in the world of hearing healthcare. Outside of my profession, I’m an avid runner—it’s my way of staying active and clearing my mind. When I’m not on the move, you’ll likely find me curled up with a good book, exploring different genres. And of course, fashion plays a huge role in my life! Whether it’s keeping up with trends or finding unique styles, I love expressing myself through what I wear."
How did you first discover the world of fashion rentals? Was there a specific moment that inspired you to start renting out your wardrobe?
The world of fashion rentals really caught my attention post-pandemic. As I learned more about the environmental impact of fast fashion, I became passionate about making high-end fashion more accessible and sustainable. I also saw an opportunity to make some extra income alongside my degree, which was quite demanding and left little room for a traditional student job. While there wasn’t one specific moment, I noticed that people were interested in luxury brands but couldn’t always justify the expense for a single use. This led me to realise that fashion rentals could bridge that gap. In the spring of 2022, I used my savings to buy five Needle & Thread gowns from Selfridges and listed them for rental. It was the perfect way to blend my love for fashion with a more eco-conscious approach, all while managing my busy schedule.
How long have you been renting out your wardrobe, and what was the first item you ever rented out?
I’ve been renting out my wardrobe since March 2022, and it’s been an incredible journey so far! The first gown I ever rented out was a Needle & Thread meadow sequin gown in a stunning duck egg blue. That dress has a special place in my heart because it marked the beginning of my passion for sustainable fashion. I’m still as passionate about it today as I was back then, and I love being able to help people look fabulous while also making a positive impact on the environment."
Can you share one of your most memorable rental experiences? Perhaps a special event or a particularly happy renter?
One of the things I love most about renting out my wardrobe is seeing where my dresses travel! It's amazing to think that my gowns have been worn all over the world—from Los Angeles to Rome, and even Istanbul. Some of my dresses have even made appearances at prestigious events like the BAFTAs, the NTAs, and the Cheltenham Races. It’s such a rewarding feeling knowing that something I’ve curated is part of someone’s special moment. One of my most memorable experiences was when a renter wore one of my gowns to the BAFTAs—seeing pictures of her looking stunning at such an iconic event made it all feel so worth it!
How do you decide which items from your wardrobe are perfect for renting out? Any tips for making those choices?
I always keep an eye on trends to decide which items are ideal for renting out. Apps like LTK (LikeToKnow.it) are great for spotting patterns in what’s popular. I noticed that cherry red and suede are making big moves this A/W season, so I’m definitely looking to incorporate those into my collection, as I hope to expand my current wardrobe to elevated basics soon. My tip for choosing the right pieces is to stay on top of seasonal trends, but also pick timeless items that can be worn for multiple occasions. It’s all about balancing trendy with classic to make sure renters feel stylish no matter what event they’re attending!
What’s been the biggest surprise or unexpected benefit you’ve found from renting out your wardrobe?
The biggest surprise I’ve found from renting out my wardrobe is how important good service is in building relationships. I’ve realised that when you provide an excellent experience—whether it’s through communication, flexibility, or ensuring each item is in perfect condition—people are much more likely to return. It’s not just about the dresses; it’s about how you make the renters feel. I’ve had so many loyal customers come back to me for multiple events, which has been such an unexpected and rewarding benefit!
Do you have any fashion rental disasters or funny stories you’d like to share? We all have a few!
Most of my rentals go smoothly and without any issues, but there are occasional hiccups. One funny aspect is dealing with renters who go MIA, leaving you wondering if you'll ever see your dress again. Thankfully, I've never had a dress go completely missing, though sometimes they do come back a bit late. It’s all part of the process, and while it can be a bit stressful, it often makes for a good story in the end!
How do you handle the care and maintenance of your rental items to keep them in top-notch condition?
To keep my rental items in top-notch condition, choosing the right dry cleaner is crucial. The best ones take their time and handle garments with great care. For anyone based in Leicestershire, I highly recommend Syston Dry Cleaners. They’ve been fabulous in removing all sorts of stains from the dresses I’ve sent out, ensuring they’re always in pristine condition for the next renter.
Finally, what do you love most about being part of the fashion rental community?
What I love most about being part of the fashion rental community is the sense of self-satisfaction it brings. Seeing photos of customers looking stunning in gowns from my wardrobe is incredibly rewarding. It’s amazing to know that something I’ve curated is helping someone feel special for their event. I also cherish the little notes I sometimes receive with returned items—they often make my day and remind me of the personal connections I’ve made through this journey.
