Tell us a bit about yourself! Who is Sakthi Sena outside of the fashion rental world?
Outside of the fashion rental world, I’m a creative enthusiast who loves exploring new cultures, indulging in new culinary experiences, and advocating for sustainable living. My interests really intersect with my work because I believe in making stylish living more accessible and sustainable for everyone. When I’m not curating my rental collection, you might find me traveling, trying out new recipes, or enjoying nature.
How did you first discover the world of fashion rentals? Was there a specific moment that inspired you to start renting out your wardrobe?
I discovered fashion rentals during the pandemic when I came across various rental platforms. I’ve always loved high-end clothes, but I didn’t have enough opportunities to wear them, so I avoided buying them due to concerns about sustainability. When I discovered these rental platforms, it gave me a great idea—I could share these pieces with others, make fashion more circular, and help reduce the waste that the fashion industry often creates.
How long have you been renting out your wardrobe, and what was the first item you ever rented out?
I’ve been renting out my wardrobe for about two years now. The first item I ever rented out was a House of CB rose print midi sundress. It was a piece that always attracted compliments, and I thought it was the perfect way to start sharing my wardrobe.
What’s the story behind your favourite item in your rental collection? Why do you love it so much?
My favourite item in my rental collection is a gold jumpsuit from Nadine Merabi. It’s special because it was one of the first pieces I acquired with the intention of sharing it through my rental business. It’s a showstopper at events, and every time someone rents it, they come back with incredible stories about the compliments they received. It feels like this jumpsuit has its own journey with each new renter.
Can you share one of your most memorable rental experiences? Perhaps a special event or a particularly happy renter?
One of my most memorable rental experiences was when a bride rented a delicate pink maxi for her civil wedding. She was thrilled to find something that matched her vision perfectly without having to buy it outright. After the wedding, she sent me a heartfelt thank-you note along with photos from her big day. It was a beautiful reminder of how fashion can play a part in some of life’s most cherished moments.
What are your top three must-have items in your rental wardrobe? Any timeless pieces that always get rented out?
My top three are:
The Realisation Par Gia dress, which is such a versatile piece that works for any season and event.
The Taller Marmo Ubud dress in bubblegum pink, a statement dress that turns heads but is still elegant enough to fit a variety of occasions.
A little black dress, like the House of CB Elida off-shoulder mini dress, which is a timeless classic that every girl needs in her wardrobe.
How do you decide which items from your wardrobe are perfect for renting out? Any tips for making those choices?
When deciding what to rent out, I look for items that are high-quality and versatile—something someone could easily wear to a variety of events. I also consider the uniqueness of the piece; if it stands out or isn’t easily found in stores, it’s likely a good candidate. My tip for others would be to start with your most complimented items—those pieces that always catch others’ eyes are usually perfect for renting.
What’s been the biggest surprise or unexpected benefit you’ve found from renting out your wardrobe?
The biggest surprise has been the sense of community that’s developed around my rental business. I’ve connected with so many amazing people who share my love for fashion and sustainability. It’s been incredibly rewarding to see how a shared wardrobe can bring people together and spark new friendships.
Do you have any fashion rental disasters or funny stories you’d like to share? We all have a few!
Yes, there was a memorable incident when a renter borrowed a beautiful, floor-length sequin gown for a black-tie event. When the dress was returned, I was surprised to find that it had been torn completely at the ends. The renter explained that during the event, she had accidentally stepped on the hem of the gown multiple times, which eventually led to the fabric tearing. She was very apologetic and felt terrible about what happened. It was one of those moments that reminded me of the unpredictable nature of renting out clothes, but it also highlighted the importance of selecting durable pieces and being prepared for the unexpected. It took some careful repairs to restore the dress, but it was a learning experience that helped me refine how I manage and maintain my rental collection.
How do you handle the care and maintenance of your rental items to keep them in top-notch condition?
I’m very particular about the care and maintenance of my rental items. After each rental, everything is professionally cleaned, and I inspect each piece closely for any signs of wear or damage. I also use garment bags and proper storage methods to ensure that everything stays in pristine condition between rentals. It’s all about preserving the quality so that each renter has the best experience possible.
What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting out with renting their wardrobe? Any beginner’s tips?
My advice would be to start small and choose items you know people love and that are versatile. Quality over quantity is key—invest in keeping your items in excellent condition. Also, take the time to get good photos of your items; this really helps them stand out and attract renters. Finally, be responsive and communicative with your renters; great customer service can lead to repeat business.
How do you stay updated with the latest fashion trends? Any favourite influencers or fashion sites you follow?
I stay updated by following a mix of fashion magazines, Instagram influencers, and fashion blogs. But beyond trends, I focus on timeless styles that I know will remain popular with renters season after season.
What’s your secret to taking great photos for your rental listings? Any tips for making items look irresistible?
Good lighting is everything! Natural light is ideal because it showcases the true color and texture of the fabric. I also like to take photos from different angles and include close-ups of any unique details. If possible, I try to show the item being worn so renters can get a sense of how it fits and moves. Lastly, I keep the background simple and clean to keep the focus on the item.
Have you noticed any changes in your own shopping habits since you started renting out your wardrobe?
Definitely. I’m much more intentional with my purchases now. I look for pieces that are not only stylish but also durable and versatile enough to be rented out multiple times. I’ve also become more conscious of sustainability, opting for quality over quantity and supporting brands that align with those values.
Finally, what do you love most about being part of the fashion rental community?
What I love most is the positive impact we’re making together. It’s empowering to be part of a movement that promotes sustainable fashion and challenges the traditional buy-and-discard model. Plus, it’s incredibly rewarding to help people feel confident and beautiful for their special occasions without the need for constant shopping. The sense of community and shared values is what keeps me passionate about this business every day.
